From pioneer in business informatics to entrepreneur: successfully bridging knowledge transfer and upscaling
Saarbrücken, October 20, 2025
Saarland University has awarded Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. August-Wilhelm Scheer, founder of the Scheer Group, the title of Honorary Senator – the university’s highest distinction, recognising outstanding contributions to academia and society.
In 1975, Professor Scheer became one of the youngest professors at Saarland University when he assumed the Chair of Business Informatics, where he carried out groundbreaking scientific work. Building on his research in business process modeling and the development of the ARIS concept at Saarland University, he went on to found IDS Scheer AG in the 1980s, establishing a globally recognised enterprise group.
His outstanding achievements are particularly evident in the successful establishment of today's Scheer IDS and Scheer IMC. Prof. Scheer has consistently translated his academic insights into scalable, market-leading solutions for business process management and digital learning platforms. Today, the companies of the Scheer Group, with around 1,300 employees across more than 20 international locations, are among the leading partners in digital transformation.
The University Senate commended Professor Scheer’s ability not only to advance research, but also to apply and scale it effectively in practice. He was described as a “bridge builder between science, business and politics”, possessing a unique talent for closing the gap between academic research and commercial application.
Through initiatives such as the non-profit August-Wilhelm Scheer Institute for Digital Products and Processes and the Scheer School of Digital Sciences, he promotes practical research and continuing education. His commitment strengthens the development of future-oriented skills and contributes significantly to the upscaling of digital innovation. Through his personal commitment, he has had a lasting impact on the Saar region as a center of innovation and has also set groundbreaking trends at the national and international level.
